Kensington is a quiet neighborhood in northern San Diego and a place to escape to from the fast-paced city life. This neighborhood, complete with manicured lawns, and many Spanish revival style homes, is actually just 15 minutes from Downtown. This neighborhood subdivision, named after a borough in west London, England was originally developed in 1910. Defined by its boarders of the 15 freeway to the west and the 8 freeway to the north, to the east by fairmont avenue and to the south by El Cajon Boulevard, Kensington is unique in both shape and character complete with curving streets, stone gateways, and even ornamental lighting. Some feel Kensington would be a strong candidate for historical district classification.
Annual community events, are always bringing people closer together, and is one way this neighborhood has been able to keep a small town feel. Traditions like the Memorial Day Parade (a neighborhood-wide celebration), and a street basketball tournament with a block party held on the Fourth of July. Many of the streets, in Kensington, also host their own separate annual celebrations and parties. The sense of community is certainly very strong in Kensington.
With everything Kensington has to offer within walking distance, this lovely community has almost a village feel. The tree lined sidewalks and winding streets run and twist along side gorgeous homes and make for a delightful stroll while walking the dog, meeting neighbors, and getting exercise. Or take a trip to “main street” (Adams Ave) to sip some coffee, head to the library, grab a bite to eat, or to go out for drinks and live music. With a mediterranean climate, residents also like the beach is about 20 minutes away, and when the snow is falling, drive just under two hours and skiing can be enjoyed too.
This small close-knit community a coveted place to live by many. The housing styles you will find here are Craftsman (the first type of homes built in 1910), Spanish revival, Spanish, and Mission. The blend of these styles make for a very aesthetically pleasing combination of architecture and design to be enjoyed by all residents.
