Within the Point Loma community of San Diego, California you will find the neighborhood of Loma Portal. northeast of Nimitz Blvd. and northwest of Rosecrans St. It is a darling hilly place that overlooks the gorgeous San Diego Bay. Loma Portal is known for its street lamps. Instead of being on the sidewalks, they have uniquely been placed in the center of the intersections. This neighborhood (as well as an adjacent neighborhood of Roseville), is also home to the “alphabetical author streets” where streets are alphabetically named after various authors from Addison to Zola for its east-west streets. They even have a second section starting with Alcott. Loma Portal’s bigger north-south streets are Catalina Blvd., Chatsworth Blvd., and Rosecrans St.
Several elementary schools, along with Dana Middle School and Point Loma High School are in Loma Point’s boundaries. An 1.4-acre park, known as Plumosa Park is here as well. However, this area is predominately a residential area having some business, retail stores, and shops running along Voltaire St. In addition, Lindbergh Field’s takeoff flight path is directly over Loma Portal giving way to the “Point Loma Pause” because jokingly all conversations come to a halt, for a brief moment, due to the airplane noise.
Residents love living in Loma Portal especially for the community support and camaraderie of the neighborhood. In fact, throughout San Diego this little populace is known for its elaborate neighborhood decorations during the holiday season. Particularly known by many, are several sections of Chatsworth Blvd. and Garrison St. where they really come together showing their love of the holidays through their display of highly complicated, detailed, and beautiful holiday decorations. In Plumosa Park, they also hold an area-wide lighting of luminaries (paper lanterns) which occurs every Christmas Eve. These events and much more bring this little community neighborhood of Loma Portal together in a spirit of fellowship.
