Some think of San Diego as California’s birthplace because the Europeans discovered San Diego Bay first when settling the California region. The Kumeyaay Native American people lived there for as much as 12,000 years prior to this discovery. However, in 1542, San Diego Bay was discovered by Juan Rodriquez Cabrillo. It would then take some 200 years longer for European settlers to actually live in the area. In 1850, California became a state with the town of San Diego as part of it.
Staying a relatively small town, San Diego saw major growth in 1880. This can be attributed to the military establishing a good real estate foothold in order to develop military facilities. Having these facilities right here in San Diego, make some people feel even more safe and secure. In addition to multiple military facilities, many major universities call San Diego home. Some of these include University of San Diego, University of California, San Diego, and San Diego State University. With these universities and others so close, it makes San Diego a great place to live for furthering higher educational pursuits.
In addition, due in part to its beautiful weather, San Diego attracts a wonderfully diverse population. With an average temperature of 73°F during the hottest part of the year, while only dipping down to 57°F during the coolest months, what’s not to love. This weather is perfect for shopping, family gatherings, outdoor exercising, taking leisure walks, and enjoying life.
San Diego also has marvelous shopping. With many speciality and gift shops, shopping malls and antique stores, farmers markets and art galleries, and factory outlets and street markets there is something for everyone’s shopping taste in San Diego. Let’s not forget about the breweries, wineries, vineyards, restaurants, and night life too. All of this, along with many water attractions, parks, outdoor activities, and much more, makes living in San Diego unparalleled to living in any other place!
